I've had all kinds done to my hair and i'm going to tell you the ones to stay true to, and the ones to stear clear of!
Great Lengths and S.O.Cap hair extensions are awesome. The Great Lengths cost me $4000 when I had them done both times. The only great thing about them is the fact they last about 6 months.. which is cool for busy people but some of us don't always have an extra $4000 lying around every 6 months! S.O.Cap ran around $2000, and to be honest I didn't see much a difference between the two.. except for that extra 2K! Great lines.. pricey as they come. Not always the way you should go.
2 ways you definitely should NEVER go no matter who tells you otherwise.. glue and weave. Some people depend on the two for their hair.. great for them. Some of us can't handle it. Think about it. You have the hair glued into your scalp. Then it comes time to have them taken out. The hair is ripped away (taken out) from your scalp.. you can only imagine the damage done. The first time I had extensions put in I went this route. I stayed up the whole night afterwards literally pulling clumps out of my hair. It was scary. You will find stylists who will give you "good deals" on their techniques with glue and stitching. Tell that to what's left of your baby fine hair in the trash can! Not to be harsh, but it's a horrible way to go when there are so many other better options. First off, glue and water DON'T mix.. and what I mean by that is of course you're going to have to wash your hair, right? The glue stinks, it's tacky, it's just wrong. Please don't do this. Next comes the weave. Some people rely on weave for maybe a week or two, sometimes a month. That's cool. The stylist won't have a problem taking them out. Weave can LAST 3-4 months. That's cool.. but then it comes time to take them out. Tools are tools, and stylists have great tools.. but there's nothing great about taking something that is sewn into your scalp out of your hair. It's pretty much the same affect as the glue. Stitching, tieing, knotting, sewing.. it's all the same. It's painful. Weave can take about 2-3 hours depending on your hair and the length of the extensions to be done. That's two hours of someone pulling at your hair and knotting and tieing and so on. Sleeping is a pain. Any which way you lay pulls at your hair. Your head throbs. This goes away within in a few days, that's because the trac starts to fall. Then you have to go in and spend another $150-200 having them retightened. Some people can find better deals.. I couldn't. That means if you have weave done you'll have to revisit your stylist every 2-3 weeks to have them retightened. It's just too time consuming. Bottom line, glue and weave just isn't safe. I apologize to those who say it's the best they've ever found but for some of us it's just not so great! Before extensions, my hair was about breast length.. very fine.. but somewhat long and very light blonde. These 2 options just were not good to my hair and it's the same for lots of people who take these risks.
Hair does need time to breathe between extensions! I usually let my hair chill for 2-3 weeks before getting extensions done again and most of the time all you have to really do is get 1/4 of an inch, to a full inch of your hair trimmed to keep things good. Whoever said you have to shave your head is full of it. Don't listen to that garbage. So many people will try to scare you out of hair extensions, no matter what kind. They are amateurs who just didn't know what to look for! :)
I was so attached (haha.. literally) to hair extensions that I figured hey, why not take some classes to learn how to do them for myself and others professionally? So, I did. I've rubbed elbows with some extensionists out of California and New York, some that work for Great Lengths and S.O.Cap, and i've learned some really cool secrets. When I took the classes, I learned all the tricks of the trade and I got access to some great places that supply the best of the best with the hair and tools. Before I get to all of that, I want to talk about the hair and tools themselves.
When it comes to hair, you don't get any better than European and Virgin hair. Great quality. So easy to work with! I've done business with some of the Asian suppliers in the past and to be honest, I was never impressed. They never understood what I wanted, and they never delivered what they promised. Of course the hair looks good in pictures and in packages, but the real life result is just not up to par. They require so much maintanence for a reason.. it's CHEAP! The people making this hair could care less what they will look like in your hair. So, I never, ever, ever use Asian or Indian hair. Stringy, ratted, tangly messes. Yuck. Stick with European and Virgin hair. It lasts so long and requires half of the upkeep. Of course any hair extensions are going to have to be well taken care of, some more than others. European and Virgin is so silky, such good quality, I am sold!
Now for tools. I have two types of Heat Connectors that I have purchased from the Balmain Paris Hair Extension line. They are pricey.. but they've worked wonders for me. You can find heat tools just as great for a fraction of the cost in the places i'm going to mention to you. I'm a pink fanatic, so if you're into cool colors they have those as well! You just have to do your homework, and that's where people screw up I think. Of course these places are also going to supply tools such as glue pots, glue sticks, glue guns, etc. Refer back to what I said before, glue=bad!! Some people depend on the glue though so, of course, these places are going to supply them.
I have used clip ins, but I prefer the pre-tipped individual strands of hair. I think Jessica Simpson's line is ridiculous and the cost is outrageous for hair you can find elsewhere that is so much better. The hype surrounding this line is crazy and I just don't get it. I know it works for some people but i've never been impressed, mainly because I love long, super blonde locks and Jessica just doesn't deliver. My opinion though.
Pre-tipped individual extensions are gold. This is the kind of hair Great Lengths and such uses. You can find various pictures on the web if you want an up close look. The pre-tipped lingo just means the tip of the hair is already pre-bonded for use with a heat connector. The safest, best way to go is the Keratin tipped. Keratin is an excellent protein for the hair. Yes, pre bonded does mean pre-glued, BUT that's why you want the Keratin tipped! It means healthy, safe results for the hair. Just do the math.
Now for the secret places! There are so many places in the States that will overcharge and never deliver. You're not going to find the good quality stuff in a secluded beauty supply store, honestly. Plus, you will be shelling out so much more in these places. I live in Texas and i've never been to a Sally Beauty Supply store that had hair extensions, and if they did, they would only have the clip ins. Chances are you won't find the color or length you desire. I see nothing wrong with online shopping, and that's where the secret places come in! Where do you think these top brand salons and stylists get their goods?! So, if you're cool with shopping online, here you go!

I use to do them myself. If you want the best, done pro, you're looking at a few thousand dollars, no joke. I would spend about $100 or so just to buy the hair to do them by myself... ONLY use human hair, synthetic will tangle and look like a cheap wig in about a week.
However, you can't really use conditioner on your hair much, unless you have a weave done and they're sewn in. You can't wash it like normal, and you have to be very careful with them when you comb your hair. I use to put mine in pig-tail style braids when I slept ,with a bandana over the top of my head so they wouldn't get really tangled. The less you play with them, the better they'll look. But trust that it's a huge investment, of both time and money.

Now, depending on what kind you get the maintenance as far as cleaning will be different so you should talk to your stylest about what products will be best. HOWEVER, in case you are unsure of what hair extentions are... let me tell you. They are pieces of long hair that is glued to your natural hair as close to the scalp as possible. If they are done incorrectly they can feel like you have alot of rubber bands in your hair all the time (the reason why Britney Spears shaved her head) and can be painful (again if done wrong). The ONLY way to remove them from your hair is to shave your head and have new ones put in. They are quite expensive and maintenance is expensive as well. If you are not willing to make a life long decision on keeping up on them OR willing to shave your head I would not get them. Good luck.

You can have them glued in which is hard to keep up and you have to use a special remover to get the glue taken out. i dont really suggest these.
you can get them weaved in but it takes about 2 to 3 hours. i like it this way and it last about 3 months or so and then you just go get them tightened and its not too expensive it just depends where you go it cost me about 180.
or you can get them individually bonded which cost quite a bit more and last about three to 6 months. i have never had this done tho.
but theres always the clip on hair extensions they dont cost too much and you can take them out whenever you want...
Just go to you local beauty supply and talked to them about which hair is the best to buy, because its all a difference of oppinion, but Indian hair is very good!
